There are plenty of arguments for why one blog makes more money with adsense than another. I'm sure there is validity to all arguments: Backlinks, Pageviews, visits, content quality content, obtuse audience. I've read and heard all sorts of things. I'[ve even heard about the importance of hiding your adsense ads. Its my contention that I don't want to go to a bog and feel like I'm being pushed into spam sites that just want to sell me something I have no intention of buying. That's just me. Like I said I've read alot of material, but I've got to say the best blog I've found out there yet is www.monetizationweekly.com it gives just about every argument there is for why one blog might be more successful than another. Check it out!

@3Gp: According to my analysis only search engine traffic and that in huge amount can give you a high ctr. People who complain of having lower are most probably not having much of SE traffic

I am actually afraid to see Everton's final consultant bill ;)

The FIFA 08 idea was/is great. Traffic is steadily increasing (it also helps to have a link on Wikipedia)

I use Google Analytics and the blog stats plugin from wordpress. It gives me a quick overlook over the most read posts, referrers, links and so forth.

Mint has the advantage that it is running on your server and the disadvantage that it is not free and uses system resources.

Google Analytics is free but it increases the loading times for the visitor and it could give problems if the service has a problem.

You could also check your webhost to see if he offers any statistics for your site, awstats for instance is a nice program.

I would agree that feedburner fill rate is too low. Many of the advertisement come with a geographic dependencies which is not worth.

@Martin: Even I am waiting for Google's program to show up ( if they have any plans either on marketing or new style). Fan doesn't work well unless you have 2000+ and kind of site.

I've got mine tucked away in the sidebar and it only appears about 0.5% of the time so for now I'll leave it alone, but I've been disappointed by the fill rate as well.

Blogads seems to have died as well

Everton Feedburner ads never seemed to work for my site and I'm only using them on my feed to make a few - really few - bucks. I keep the feed ads in the hope that the service will finally kick of after the Google purchase.

A second reason why I never put them up was that I did not want to ad more ads on my site. I already had serious difficulties convincing myself to add Tribal Fusion to my blog ;)

I never thought it would make much sense to add another ad on my blog for just an increase of 1% or even less in revenue

Just spotted you don't run feedburner ads on your site - interested to hear why not?

To be honest, I'm making less from feedburner every month and they are now down to less per month than I make from adsense in a day, so I'm considering whether or not to pull them, so interested to hear your views.

It's not really about being de-sensitised to a site, it's about what you are doing there in the first place

A search engine visitor is also looking for a particular service or piece of information. So, if they've chosen your link from a set of results on Google and your site is showing ads relevant to what they are looking for, they will probably click on them.

Whereas regular readers are visiting just to see what you've written about recently, and are not necessarily looking for things to buy etc

At over $4k a month in AdSense earning, you must be doing something right! I had always wondered why John Chow's AdSense earning were so low (about $1K a month), but when I was reading your analysis of search traffic - it makes sense to me now. JC's readers see his site everyday and have become blind to the AdSense ads. A search brings a brand new person to your site and they are not as de-sensitized to the placement of the ads. Excellent point.

To write a post which people look for is the key. If you can get lot of hits from google money is always on the way. After optimizing my posts I was able to do so. Now I am able to make some good money out of adsense. Great tips

I think the difference is also partly down to audience - John Chow's readers are generally more internet savvy and therefore more likely to recongnise and ignore adsense ads.
