Thanks Micheal. I do have a site of over 100,000 odd pages. It will be difficult to locate all broken links on these pages. Will this have an adverse effect on by site performance or search engine crawlability?

Most broken links will show up on Google Webmaster Tools, but tools like linktiger are quite helpful.

Not to mention, what is the impression the reader gets when he or she encounters dead links on your site? A site that is not maintained anymore.

Validation is of prime importance, and I can not stress that enough. W3C compliance is an absolute necessity if you wish to be competitive. It is best if you make sure of this aspect of your site from word go, otherwise trying to rectify it later on can prove to be expensive and annoying....
