I've just disabled file indexing, thanks for the tips! Given this a StumbleUpon review and deli.cio.us tag.

Removing unwanted programs that startup with your computer will also reduce boot upo times. Go to run  -enter msconfig, click on the startup tab and uncheck any programs you don't want to start up [be careful here] when you switch your computer on.

Generally a good and useful article but clearing out the prefetch files is not a good move.

    See here at XP Myths:
    http://home.comcast.net/~SupportCD/XPMyths.html

(Search for Prefetch as there are lots of different "Myths" on the page.

It's quite ironic that there used to be a Norton product out there that actually speeded things up!

The only thing I've noticed has made a real difference is the file indexing, definitely faster without it, thanks.

Yup, file indexing hobbles the system... almost akin to hacking away both legs on a marathon runner.

I just disabled file indexing on my Asus eeePC that runs WinXP. It shuts down almost in 2 seconds. ... and most files start up in a second.

Doncha just love those SSD drives?

This is some good advice. I'm not a Norton fan though, and refuse to believe they can speed up anything!

I'm glad you mentioned "Black Viper" because that guy is something of a genius when it comes to tweaking either XP or VISTA, I've been using his XP gaming tweak for years, though I would not recommended it for the faint hearted, only the very essential services are left running, everything else is disabled, makes XP very quick indeed!

VISTA is  resource hog, it really is, if your running Aero, plus the Sidebar, plus Widgets it will suck up your memory, open task manager and check the number of services running on a VISTA installation vs an XP installation, they're almost doubled on VISTA.

Check out the Black Viper website, you need to read everything that he's written on VISTA before applying any of his tweaks ... otherwise you'll break something.

Great tips. I was just about to throw my XP Laptop. I will try these tips to see how well they work. New XP Service pack is also suppose to speed up XP so you might want to add that to the list.
