I agree with mlankton. Porn doesn't have the effect it once had when it comes to physical rentals (no pun intended). Too many people stick to the internet for their rentals of that stuff these days for it to have any weight on a format war. Makes you wonder if anybody will fill their shoes in turns of the amount of pull they once had on formats, though.

You may have a point there.. but the fact still remains that sony has screwd up and failed mass adoption on *every* single format they have ever created, porn or not.

They may be better formats (they are in most cases), they may be cheaper (usually not), it doesn't matter, they manage to cock it up.

I must admit. The HD war has gotten a lot futher then I ever thought it would. I still don't think that high def DVDs are ever going to take off like standard DVDs have had. A majority of consumers out there already think that DVDs are in HD, so placing the high definition version on the shelf only confuse them that much more.

just a comment on MD format.. god i loved (love?) my sony MD player... 5 hours of songs on a disc.. removable discs are small.. cant damage the bastards... and best part is that one AA battery still gets me 40-45 hours of playback, whereas my ipod is nice and easy to use, but sucks down the battery life, and most of them die after 15 months.

not to mention other crappy mp3 players are mostly in the same boat.. MD player still plays like new after all these years, still gets perfect battery life, but sony just cocked up in DRMing the beast to hell and screwing over people who wanted to use it for anything other than music playback (wow i can record stuff, but i'm not permitted to take the music OFF the player like i can put music on)

It's all because of the porn. (seriously). VHS was pron format of choice.. and look sony repeats mistake by saying no adult films are to be allowed on blue-ray

Also, sony has a *huge* habit of making these (sometimes amazing) formats that never catch on because of a sony screw up.

This time they have the advantage of PS3 adoptions.. but.. minidiscs... ATRAC audio compression (still beats the pants off of mp3 as far as size to quality ratio), betamax, the list goes on.. and on.. and on...

Even the sony memory card never got any adoption outside of sony branded things... Sony manages to screw up every format it's ever done, and my money is on blu-ray following in suit.

I generally wait for an year to buy a new adopter as i have seen the prices drop remarkably within a year sometimes they drop even in 6 months too.So its wise to wait for a bit of time and just dont go and buy

New tech always comes out $$$$. It's insane, therefore to be an early adopter in the PC/gadget arena. Let someone else pay for those firm's R&D. Then when prices drop one year late (and the tech gets stable)), BUY!

That is one area where Toshiba has been brilliant. They realized that even with the PS3's mediocre performance, Sony was getting a lot of players in people's homes. Toshiba offered retailers incentives, and by the end of the first year that HD DVD players were available, one could be purchased for just over $200.

Yeah, I'd say $700 is a load of crap also. But, that's the way all new gadgets are...too expensive. It will come down soon.

I was just configuring a Dell laptop and to add a Blu-Ray drive was an additional $700, bollocks I say. I hope neither win, and the new cheaper format trumps them. thieves.
