Dugg for Foxit reader - I hate how Acrobat keeps installing crap in the background and is always updating. It's so damn slow as well.

    Thanks!

    Another freeware list...

And I have my own too (made in Russian and English shortnames) - but it is much longer ;)

112 freeware titles. Want anybody challenge me on that?

Wow great list. I use most of them listed here, especially I love the first tool mentioned here - Foxit Reader! :D

MyToGo for Skype allows ANY Phone to gain access to Skype calling services, this includes calling Skype Names for FREE, checking Skype Voice Mail for FREE as well as using Skype rates for both local and long distance calling, and does not require any software to be installed on the phone. MyToGo for Skype is FREE

Thanks for sharing these useful apps. I currently use skype, VLC Media PlayeR, GIMP, Ad Aware SE Personal, Google Reader. I use Adobe Acrobat Reader but I'm not happy with it because it crashes a lot! I will try yours and give you my feedback. I think the antivirus you use is weak so I will not try it! I will try the other apps and tell you....Thanks for your nice post

    I can't live without

TrueCrypt - Keeps the CIA out of my files
VistaManager - For folks who can't help but tweak something to death
Snarfer - to funnel the latest news onto the desktop - without the hassle of logging on like at googlereader

How much does Grisoft pay sites like yours to recommend their garbage software!

Both the avp and anti spyware apps are probably rated the lowest in detection of all similar programs done in tests!
  • Micah · 2 years ago
Wow, I didn't even know there was an alternative to Adobe Reader. This will be a breath of fresh air, as the stupid Adobe program takes forever to load on my computer. Good list, thanks.

I heard good things about the PC Decrapifier (nice name!) that takes out all that useless trial software that most manufacturers now bloat your computer with. Never tried it myself but heard good things about it.

I have Skype, CCleaner, AVG Anti-virus from your list. May have to check out the rest that I have no idea about. Thanks!

On every new install I do, I always put a copy of AVG, GIMP, Ad-aware, and Spybot on the machine.

Norton used to put out a decent product. Now it's just crapware. My dad kept buying it until I showed him what free products are out there that do twice the job with half the hassle.

No, Foxit is not the best free alternative to Acrobat. It is http://www.docu-track.com/home/prod_user/pdfx_v.... Has many more features than Foxit. I love the tabs support.

Paint.NET is better than GIMP. If you have to give it to GIMP, at least make it GimpShop.

Feed Reader is way better (more features) than Google Reader.
  • Phil Dufault · 2 years ago
Notepad++ and foobar2000 are a must on my list.
  • Vivek · 2 years ago
I would make quite a few changes there...

    Paint.NET (instead of GIMP)
Sequoiaview (instead of TreeView, more classy :P)
IrfanView (everything about images in one place)
JFileRecovery (to extract data from scratched CDs)
    PDFCreator

Actually, you're right! There are a million of good ones out there !
We can make list of as many useful freewares we want :)

I agree - PDF Xchange Viewer is a better alternative to Acrobat Reader than Foxit; I'd include File Shredder (where once I recommended Eraser) and Undelete Plus (where once I would recommend Recuva). As for a free media player, KMPlayer rocks.
  • Greg · 2 years ago
I am surprised no one has mentioned Linux yet :P

I have been using Google Docs more and more lately and I have been pleased with it. In fact Google is slowly replacing more and more of my software. First mail, then news reader, now word pro.

I find AVG to be too much of a resource hog. I recommend AntiVir as an alternative. Also, even if you already have a media player, I like foobar2000 for audio.

    Great post,Thank you!!! :D

Been a web designer myself and always on my PC its great to hear about new firefox extensions as well as anti virus. I have been running windows live onecare and am looking for something free that should do a good job, this software looks like what i am after
  • Yigit T. · 2 years ago
    Thanks, nice programs :)

I've not set up FoxIt as my default pdf reader, seems to be working better performance-wise, shall see how good it is. I've noticed it has trouble with feature-rich pdfs such as Gamerzine's pdf, but I can always open that with Adobe Reader.

An alternative to AVG (which I'm not a big fan of these days) would be Avast if you're looking for a free anti-virus solution - but I can't get rid of the "you get what you pay for" attitude when it comes to anti-virus products.
  • steve Mac · 2 years ago
I agree , i ve used mostly all the software but more than Foxit i like PDF Xchange Viewer.I dont like it loads slow on my pc and always ask for download update.I am looking for some tweak software for that.
  • Maesk · 2 years ago

firebug has proven to be quite a useful tool. Although I used it for some minor things, now I use it every day as it is very flexible. With firebug one can even save any song that can be listened to online. I don't suggest anyone to do this as it's considered theft.
