Connected Internet: May 2008: WordPress Plugins Used On This Site

  • Joe Cole · 1 year ago
    I think you use too many plugins :-D I only use 4 - 6 plugins

    You can never use too many plugins...to a point at least. ;)

    I'm running a similar amount myself - all adding additional functionality for my readers or myself. The only problem would arise if the site suffers as a whole in terms of performance and having too many options that bamboozle it's readership.

    Hi Everton,

    Good set of plugins, I use several of them already but the CommentLuv one looks a really great idea, I will be giving it a try :)

    BTW have you tried Dragon Design Sitemap Generator for a Site Index?

    @Zath

    I've been lucky that I've had someone in to find which plugins are hogs and to find alternatives e.g. being told that Lightbox alone was accounting for 50% of my load time.
    Also, I dont' think you should add a plugin unless there is a real reader benefit. If you look at my list the only plugins which are for 'me' are: admin big width, php widgets, all in one and TLA. There are many tweaks I've done manually to reduce the need to use a plugin

    @Barry

    I think Sitemaps are totally useless. No reader is going to scroll through a page containing a huge long list of posts and cats e.g this site has nearly 2,500 posts.....I do use the ELA plugin which at least makes my archive pages more manageable, and definitely a lot better looking!

    I use mint for stats, which I combine with a plugin to generate the most popular posts

    Hi,

    What plugin do you use for the addition of "number of comments", "save to del.icio.us",... to your RSS feeds?

    @ShaharY

    That's not a plugin - Feedburner does that. Go into your feed settings and go to optimize/feedflare

    Your comment about the database problem you were experiencing caught my attention. I, too, have had errors not being able to establish a database connection. In fact, it just happened to me today. Trouble is that, after reading this post, I went to turn off the Lightbox plugin I had, but it was later in the day that I had the trouble with "establishing a database connecdtion." So maybe that's not it after all. Aargh! I'm not giving up though! ;)

    Btw, love the theme. Very clean and organized.

    @Mark

    Defo ditch Lightbox.

    Glad you like the new theme. I'm in love with it as it's so easy to use, and I've already got a huge list of improvements I want to make.

    If you're willing to test a fairly stable plugin, try the newest RC1 of Ajax Edit Comments.

    If you're used to AEC 1.x, it's a radical, but nice change IMO.

    Everton, one of the cool things I loved about your last theme was that you could display all posts by a blogger - did you use a plug-in for this?

    Also, how can you display the first image of every post on the home page. I love that about this theme.

    Cheers,
    Gaj

    Do you mean like this page? That's just a standard part of Wordpress. More on this here

    Thats brilliant Everton, I'm not a wordpress coder but I just read the link above and with a bit or wordpress magic managed to get it working - ha ha...(I tried this before and it didn't work but I realise that it works on user names.

    Now I need to find the best way to display the image on the from page with post summaries.

    Not sure what you mean- do you mean the author bios on each post like on this site?
  • Gaj · 1 year ago
    Sorry I should be clearer, you display a thumb next to each post on the homepage.  That look great - I'm thinking about editing my theme to do that too.

    @Gaj

    The post thumbnail images are something clever built into this theme, which is too complicated to try and explain in a comment.  Sorry!
  • Gaj · 1 year ago
    Don't worry about it, I have read about it somewhere so I will do a bit more digging around. You've helped me a lot with the autors as I can create a profile page for each blogger too.

    back to the excerpt images Everton, trying to find more info on it, do you know where I can find more info on it? is it a custom field or function or something in the excerpt?

    I have tried not to play with wordpress too much to date but I think the time has come to get my hands dirty.
