Connected Internet: Increasing The Number Of Comments On Your Blog

  • Alpesh Nakar · 2 years ago
    Hi Everton,
Thanks for the updates. I am using do follow plugin and this is a good incentive for comments to flow in.
    Cheers!

Like Alpesh I too am using DoFollow. I want to give my Commenters Sites some PR love.

Interesting idea :) Alas, because I don't actually have a site with this alias, I shalt continue to comment on your posts on a strictly 'I'm dead interested' basis :)

can someone post the link to dofollow please? I'd like to do the same - didn't realise the default was to nofollow.

Do you guys actually check and leave more comments on sites that dofollow?
  • Enblogopedia · 2 years ago
Well Everton, Technorati count the link..so I think it`s "dofollow" now;)
    did you modify it?

no, haven't touched it yet. What do you mean that Technorati sees the links? Do comments you leave here show up on your inlinks?

Sorry Everton, I don't know what`s happening to me these days...a lot of studying are driving me crazy :(

Anyway these are the Dofollow plugins I found. 1st and 2nd

    Have a nice day.

The idea sounds good but then many people are using feedburner redirector plugin. In that case this wont help

    Hey Everton,

We've seen a significant increase in comments since we made these 2 changes a few weeks ago:
    1. installed the Top Commentators plugin
    2. added the MyBlogLog avatar plugin to comments

Next, we'll be adding the threaded comments plugin - seems to do wonders for John Chow. It actually gives your comments more of a "forum" feel which is really great for getting more people involved back and forth.

Just haven't had the time to do it yet since our comments template is already heavily modified and we'd basically be replacing it. :-)

Also we'll be adding a "recent comments" plugin to highlight older posts that are still seeing action...

    * Not sure which one of these to go with though, there are 10 of them out there. Suggestions? * Our theme doesn't support widgets btw, so just looking for a simple low-overhead plugin to list the recently commented posts.

    Have an awesome day!

Well, the threaded comments plugin will be a great idea, indeed!

Oh, I forgot a very obvious one - the "subscribe to comments" plugin. Everton already has this, but many people don't.

That has done wonders for us as far as getting people to come back and leave MORE comments on a discussion after someone else comments. People tend to want to know what was said after they left their own comment.

We finally installed that since I noticed that I tend to check that "subscribe me to comments" box when I leave a comment somewhere, and Jennifer does the same. Well, lots of folks do. :-)

    Have an awesome day!

I've gone for the semilogic plugin as I trust their work more. I'm going to post all the plugins I'm using tomorrow to see if you guys have any others to recommend, or so you can download some of mine

Oh, I forgot a very obvious one - the “subscribe to comments” plugin. Everton already has this, but many people don’t.

In addition to this I've noticed that even the people who use this plugin don't use the manual subscribe option that allows users to subscribe to comments without having to comment.

Yeah, I think that's a new feature in the plugin - I downloaded it about 2 weeks ago and remember seeing something about that as a "this just in - brand new" feature.

Didn't expect it when i was going to download the plugin, but it's definitely a cool feature.

On that topic - an interesting issue that can come from using that plugin is possible spam accusations. Yes, people do get a direct link in each email so they can unsubscribe, which is great. But I was reading something on Jeff Kee's blog about this a few days ago - where someone had signed up to comments with an email of abuse@google.com or something like that.
    http://blog.jeffkee.com/2007/02/12/a-new-scam-a...

Kinda silly really, but could be worth it to go through the "subscribed" tab in the WP manage tool now and then to prune the obviously bogus stuff.

    Have an awesome day!

Nope, it's always been there :-)

Great Research. Comments are the currency of blogs, maybe I should take your lead

One more tip, Since this is a place for great discussions to happen, have you considered using Nested Comments ?

It's much nicer as a publisher when readers talk back - it keeps you going when you're not in the mood to post

One more tip, Since this is a place for great discussions to happen, have you considered using Nested Comments ?

I haven't found a plugin that works works with my paged comments. What I have been considering is adding a 'quote' option and an optiion that would allow commenters to edit their comments. I've ditched these in the past as they seemed a luxury and nobody was using them.

Would anyone find it useful if I added these or are you happy just using blockquotes?
  • Dan and Jennifer · 2 years ago
Ok, this wasn't on my todo list for today, but I broke down and added a feed for "Comments on Ask Dan and Jennifer".

Can't hurt to have it out there. :-) We've got some active commentators who are themselves bloggers, so I'd expect to see some feed subscriptions in the next day or so.

    Have an awesome day!

I agree that DoFollow helps increase comments and I am all for rewarding commenters regardless if they comment once or twenty times in a month. I am actually running a challenge to help promote blogs that use DoFollow over at the DoFollow Pingback Challenge so if you have a minute and can pop over I would appreciate it.
