Connected Internet: Increasing Alexa Rank – A Joint Experiment

  • Everton · 2 years ago
    Ok, I'll kick it off:

    date: 25/03/07
    Rank: 26024
  • TJP · 2 years ago
I read this post as well. Lots of good info.

Right now, my rank is 192,150. Let's see if these tips work.
  • Mr.Byte · 2 years ago
I think I should start first by downloading alexa toolbar. But I really dont understand the concept of measuring the traffic by alexa as not even half the people who use internet will have alexa toolbar.
  • engtech · 2 years ago
Does the Firefox SearchStatus extension work for increasing Alexa rank of the sites you visit, or is it only the IE toolbar?

    date: 26/03/07
    Rank: 40,456
  • Everton · 2 years ago
According to my research today yes - anything that asks Alexa 'whats the rank of this page?' does apparently.

I've also implemented #9 from Maki's list in my footer, although I'm not too sure about this one:

Use Alexa redirects on your website URL. Try this: http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?www.doshdosh... . Replace doshdosh.com with the URL for your website. Leave this redirected URL in blog comments as well as forum signatures. This redirect will count a unique IP address once a day so clicking it multiple times won’t help.
  • bill · 2 years ago
Tip number 9 caught my eye as well. What had me worried was this - would that redirect count as a valid link to my site when Google and the like were indexing ... or would it count as a link to Alexa? I just don't know enough about redirects and traffic ranking to gamble on it yet.

I did install the Search Status extension though. I'll also add my current stats to the frey...

    date: 3/25/07
    rank: 441,229

Let's see where we are in a week.
  • engtech · 2 years ago
I think it would count as a link to alexa -- but that doesn't really matter because all of the comments are usually nofollowed anyways.
  • Mark from Bloglyne.com · 2 years ago
What does encouraging people to use the Alexa toolbar have to do with your own traffic rank? Is it like an affiliate link that if they click through your link and install the toolbar then you get a "multiplier" to your rank? If that is the case then the rank is completely bogus...
  • engtech · 2 years ago
encouraging your readers to use the Alexa toolbar increases your rank because, well, they're reading your site with it.

If they don't use the toolbar then your rank doesn't benefit from those readers.

The redirect thing is to tell Alexa "look, I'm getting traffic!!!" (it doesn't use the toolbar), which only goes to show how dumb the entire Alexa traffic rating system is (much like Technorati rank).
  • Thilak · 2 years ago
I'm with you, I have already installed Search Status Plugin, long long time ago
  • Thilak · 2 years ago
One more query, does the Alexa widget in your sidebar has any effect over the ranking?
  • Everton · 2 years ago
One more query, does the Alexa widget in your sidebar has any effect over the ranking?

That's why it's an experiement. I guess it's not smart to make all the changes at once though
  • Mark from Bloglyne.com · 2 years ago
Alright - As of today, I have an Alexa rank of 369,624.

I have written an article about Alexa - where I encourage folks to us SS or the ATRS
    Created an Alexa Category
I have the sidebar widget installed

I will wait a couple of days and implement a few more of DoshDosh's tips...
  • Brendan · 2 years ago
I"m in...Digitalphocus.com launches the test at Alexa rank 601,807....no where to go but up!

The only problem is that, in addition to these changes, I'm hopefully building links in which skews the results. But then again, what do I care I'm 601,807!

    Let the fun begin!
  • Everton · 2 years ago
I actually think this might be working! My daily rank since I started the experiment has dropped about 10,000 to 17-18K even though my traffic has been poor the last week or so.

The 3 month average in the widget doesn't reflect this yet, but it's looking good so far!
  • bill · 2 years ago
Just thought I'd check in and share my results. At the one week mark I've increased nearly my level by nearly 50k. Here are my updated stats:

    date: 4/1/07
    rank: 391,291

As far as following your three suggestions the only thing I really managed was to install the Firefox extension on my home PC. I have not installed it on my work PC yet - I'll definitely be doing that tomorrow. My traffic has been just slightly above average (according to Analytics and SiteMeter) and my posting frequency has been constant. Not too shabby for one week I think.
  • Ashish Mohta · 2 years ago
I am using the plugin already but will it be a good idea to show up their alexa rank if its low ?
  • Everton · 2 years ago
If you're worried about visibly displaying your page rank you could try out #9 from Maki's list. I think this is the best one if it actually works
  • Ashish Mohta · 2 years ago
I saw that but will it not be annoying if I am putting it on everyblog and site.Chances are it might get caught in spam. The bloggers might just not realize it and think it as spam
  • Everton · 2 years ago
add it to your footer. Check out the first link in my footer on the left
  • Ashish Mohta · 2 years ago
Adding to footer ? It will work only if somebody clicks it right?

Then why not put it on the header where we display our blog url will that be useful?
  • Everton · 2 years ago
My theory is that when search engines crawl my site then that link will count towards raising my alexa rank. Could work...........
  • Ashish Mohta · 2 years ago
allright sounds good then.I will be using it in my footer.
  • Daniel · 2 years ago
everton, I see a 25,924 today, did it bounce back from 18,000?
  • Everton · 2 years ago
my 3 month average which is currently 25,924 has never been 18,000 - that's the daily number. At the start of the experiment my 3mht avg was 26,024 so I've seen a small improvement.

But, my daily average has improved by about 5000 to 17-18k, so the 3mth should catchup soon
  • Ashish Mohta · 2 years ago
Did it happen because you have the script or coz of one which is at the footer?
  • Everton · 2 years ago

Too early to tell to be honest, but my gut tells me yes
  • Philip Wilkinson · 2 years ago
I love stuff like this - crowd experiments :-)

I've added the redirect tip to my homepage URL setting in my browsers, and started to comment on blogs using the redirect phrase too. I've also got many more people to start downloading the toolbar for IE and firefox.

    So - stats today:
    11th April 2007
    Rank: 91,105
  • Everton · 2 years ago
good of you to drop in Phil ;-) Make sure you send some of those people to this blog!
  • Philip Wilkinson · 2 years ago
no probs - next time I want a cup of tea for stopping by :-)
  • AndyBeard · 2 years ago
I am more subtle about this than you guys, search status is also a great plugin to suggest people use in spotting nofollow links on comments and other linking structures not normally spotted.

My post on nofollow and pink boxes was the first, but I have done a few since then as well.

Even my recent post on Blogcatalog included a link to Search Status, and so far in just a few days resulted in 10 clicks through.

If you don't want to write such an extensive post, you can always just link through to others writing about such topics, and eventually half your Firefox using readers will have the plugin.
  • HMTKSteve · 2 years ago
The redirect thing is BS, it does nothing.

I added it as an iframe on my page footer and saw no jump when traffic spiked.

The easiest way to increase your Alexa ranking is to use Firefox with the toolbar. All you need is a dynamic IP and lots of time on your hands.

If you check the Alexa numbers for hmtk.com you can see how one person with the toolbar can skew the site rating by thousands of points.
  • Vijay · 2 years ago
I am using the search status extension because the toolbar sucks.. and also the widget (which isnt too impressive now)
  • Vinod @ VinodLive! · 2 years ago
I would also like to refer to another great SEO plugin for Firefox:-

    Installed Search Status Plugin
    Added the Alexa rank widget
    Created an Alexa Category
Wrote an Alexa article (which has been Stumbled today)
  • liquid parallax · 2 years ago
Thanks. I'm going to give these tips a shot.
  • Zath · 2 years ago
I've only added Alexa widget to my sidebar on my site and installed the SearchStatus extension on all my pcs so far, but I've seen a great improvement in the past few weeks, going from around 2.5mill rank to 629k.

Might try one or two of the other suggestions when I get chance, but it's going ok so far.

    Thanks for the tips!
  • Ahmad · 2 years ago
I did place the widget on a part of the site no one could see, for visual reasons I thought it would be better. I went from a rank of 330K, to 174K...So it does work...Not only that if you actually click on you widget everyday it helps too...

    Thanks,

    Ahmad

Cool tips. So, alexa is just a cheating tool to show web's ranking?? That's mean my rank 378000+ is a modified rank? Hmmm... I'm not understand the detail. If your statement is true, I can't rely on Alexa ranking anymore.

Do you have any alternative ranking tool or site that can't be cheated like alexa.com?
  • Everton · 2 years ago
Alexa ranks are good for a quick proxy of which sites have more traffic, but becuase it relies on sampling to create the stats it is never going to be 100% accurate.

I wouldn't call these tips cheating as I don't think that is fair e.g. you wouldn't call the many actions that people take to try and improve their page rank cheating.

Put an article up at Bloglyne - Increasing Alexa Rank Experiment - with updates on my part of the experiment.

Interesting results since I have backed off of comments on other sites like Connected Internet and have not updated content for about 4 weeks.

I noticed an increase of about 100k from March 27th.

    One quick question for anybody...

I keep hearing about ONE MONTH ALEXA RATINGS AVERAGE.

How can you view just one month? I mean instead of three months or latest week?

I have seen a url one time long ago that displayed ONE MONTH AVERAGES.

    Thanks,

  • Dave Starr --- ROI Guy · 2 years ago
I'm in as of 23 May ... installed the Alexa widget on a couple very low ranking sites and noted all the data, will try to remember to check back weekly.

Not sure if the redirect idea will work ... probably it will, but it's too clunkyfor me to play with. What _does_ work though, at least short term ... find a key phrase n your site that Alexa will pull up the site for and Alexa search it a couple times aday ... I use it when Iwant to vie one of my sites for some other reason ... you will like the results
  • Mark from Bloglyne.com · 2 years ago
One of the things I am doing, which may or may not be helping is that when I go to my site daily with SearchStatus installed, is I click on the traffic rank widget in my sidebar to view my stats - I think I have noticed a 20k improvement.

Alexa says this widget does not do anything to improve rankings, and that may be true just on its own, but I believe if you go to Alexa from a site through the widget with a toolbar app installed, it my help. Don't know for sure, would be interested to hear if others have had the same experience, or would be willing to add this to their experiments.
  • Nakharin · 2 years ago

How to improve Alexa Rank. I have do every step that you show in the website, After i check and check... again. But still go up as well as have many people to come to see website.

    Please help me.

    Thank you

  • Dave Starr · 2 years ago
Where's the rest of the experimenters? I started this group experiment 1 month ago, 23 May and put the Alexa Rank widget in the sidebar of 7 low-traffic blogs. Some had entries made during the test month, some did not. Results:
    ----------
    Alexa
    Gain/Loss Pct

    9391 3.80%
    138043 13.64%
    (151137) -19.46%
    38934 6.34%
    30160 3.48%
    918919 42.93%
    4969251 88.55%

    Average % 19.90%
    --------
7 "nothing" sites hardly makes an Internet but the results I see certainly show that the Alxexa widget makes a _big_ difference for low traffic, low activity sites. Anybody else got resluts to share?
  • Everton · 2 years ago
Thanks for the analysis dave - i'm down to 17k and continuing to improve
  • John Black · 2 years ago
What about installing alexa toolbar and make a small code to refresh the page every second? (ofc not to public site : ) )
  • MathsFaciles · 2 years ago

good to see so many people interested in alexa ranks, i run an alexa auto surf website, surf sieve, where the installation of toolbar is must before the surfing starts, hope it helps!

How can we improve our Alexa ranking ?

Today i came across a site AlexaRankTeam dot com which is going to increase the Alexa rankings of your site for some charge.
Can we keep faith on such site who claims for increasing alexa ranking ?

I have contacted them. They said they never failed on this project.

Alexa Ranks is inaccurate, but some advertisers use Alexa rank to gauge the value of advertising. I have tried some doshdosh tips to increase Alexa rank and it's really work. My Alexa rank increasing with just simple tips (manipulation).
  • Marek · 2 years ago
OK, today I started this Alexa experiment - toolbar installed, widget on my site,
I'm just not sure about redirects: are they necessary if you have w widget on your site?
  • NLP Master · 2 years ago
Have you seen Upmyrank.com? They make it easy to exchange traffic for alexa boosting.

Thing is- it still doesn't work so well. My rank improved just 1000 points. (with 100,000 being my average rank these days). Odd really considering my server logs indicate daily traffic of 3 to 4 GB
  • Stephen · 2 years ago

when i started to increase my alexa rank i used the redirect from alexa to my website, and installed the alexa toolbar and would flick through the my pages a few times so alexa know that the pages are there and my alexa increased but that was about 3 months ago and i left it since then and it shot back up again

  • iRonnie · 2 years ago
i think i'll try this experiment. being ranked 4million in alexa is frustrating. :(
  • ToysB · 2 years ago
I saw that but will it not be annoying if I am putting it on everyblog and site

Ye; the alexa ranking seems a bit low on my end too but my site is relatively new... Page Rank is a joke too; in the way they operate it; not its purpose.

The new Firefox plugin may be a factor although based on traffic from Firefox users on my blog, I actually would have expected an improvement. I suppose its still to early to tell what the cause is.

I got this opinion not to follow alexa widgets or redirections because it's not working much effectively. I have already used on my hotel site http://www.fortunehotels.in, so should I continue it or not??

Not working at all. I think it would be to easy to increase statistics
  • Mark from Bloglyne · 1 year ago
Well - Since I fell off the map last June/July my Alexa rank dropped significantly - at one point I was above the 200,000 level, my 3 month average rating now is 1,428,583 - it will be interesting to see if I can improve this and how quickly I can get back up into the top 200,000 again.
  • Phil Wilkinson · 1 year ago
So what's the result Everton - does it work based on the experiment results?
  • techweb · 1 year ago
Display of Alexa Site statistics is better than the toolbar.

    See: http://www.ourwedding.in

After we put the Alexa Rank display on our homepage, we observe a jump of about 1000% in 3 months !!.

We opine this is much easier rather than tool bar & redirection.
  • Everton · 1 year ago
    @Phil

It seemed to work as I dropped to around 17k. How's Crowdstorm going?

    Interesting...

Going good - we've had a lot of technical challenges to overcome last year but everything now on track :-)

I followed this and installed the widget to my site and then on the pages within the site. Two things happened and I do not know if it was by coincidence.
First my main keyword targeted webpage went from G Page 3 to G Page 1 position 7 and stayed there. Two I noticed an immediate drop from 2Mill to 1 mill in my traffic ranking.
I used a splash page and put it on every traffic exchange I could find. (No adsnese pages). In fact the splash page sold software for $6.99US. I was surprised that I actually made quite a lot of sales (thats another story and my next project) and two I was seeing results in Alexa traffic.

All this came about by installing the widget on my most popular pages. I say it works.
  • Michael · 1 year ago
the alexa redirect no longer works so do you have any other suggestions?
  • Mark from Bloglyne · 1 year ago
@E - put up a quick update on the blog about my recent rank increases.

@Terry - would like to hear more about your splash pages.

@Michael - Started putting up articles about two weeks ago, and visiting my own blog from the office and home and clicking once from each location per day on the rank widget.

I have also started to gain a few more visiters, and my rank is up about 210,000 this week.
  • Psychic Ability | TerryG · 1 year ago
Hello Mark, I would like to give you the example of my splash page. It is for a product that I use and find is nothing short of brilliant for the work I do.
    The splash page is http://www.psychic-aus.com/map
What I did was put the widget on the splash page and if a visitor is interested they click for more info (another widget on that page) even the order form.
I have seen my page views increase since I did this in recent times. I am of course targeting the main url for my experiment following along your lines.
I know the traffic exchange traffic will only be the one IP address A will record but if a user is interested and clicks my further info page then I must be getting a whole new ip address. The beauty about te's is that users are from all over the world and I will be getting a variety of C class recordings (different servers).

Hmm let me tell you my experince... I launched slBlogs.org 1st of january 2008. I tried the alexa tool bar and made my blog home paged. Then ofcause I made this discovery. Its very easy to get in to 1 million margin by it self. But there after bit tough. You need readers. With about 100 readers per day you can easily sneak in to 300000 margin where I am... Awesome right.. Hmm but i haven't used that redirect issue. Will work on that as well and see... Hope my experience is useful.

This is a great post, fortunately 70% of the time of website owner is consumed in experimenting towards increasing page rank and alexa rank. To start with increasing page rank one must start with downloading Alexa toolbar for IE or firefox on as many system possible. as a second step alexa widget on every page of your website, by this way every webpage opened is counted while calculating rank inspite is user does not have alexa toolbar installed knowtheworldaround.com
