Connected Internet: Has Your Alexa Rank Gone South Recently?

  • Robert Irizarry · 2 years ago
I've noticed the same over the last two weeks. Despite some of the highest traffic weeks I've ever had, I've seen my Alexa rank get worse - not better! I've yet to come across any explanation for it. A change in their algorithm is as good as any.

I've noticed too. Perhaps after they release the Firefox plugin, they are getting closer to the real picture?

    I've written about it here:

I'm sure this is taking a bigger affect on those of you with higher rankings. I haven't gone down in a couple of months.

The new Firefox plugin may be a factor although based on traffic from Firefox users on my blog, I actually would have expected an improvement. I suppose its still to early to tell what the cause is.

I had lost my rankings due to a hacking attack and now i am getting back on track, would like to test the firefox plugin for sure

I think the official new firefox plugin Spark is showing effect. Maybe blogs with more "Firefox with sparky" readers will get better Alexa ranks...

Yeah, I don't know what's going on either but things are certainly getting worse which sucks since at the moment, getting a better Alexa rank is def a priority.

Oddly my daily rank has shot up yet my 3 month average is going down (despite the daily rank now being higher than the 3 month average).

That is possible....if your daily rank exactly 3 months ago was higher then your 3 month average will fall

Actually, your rank can go down even if your traffic increases if someone else's traffic increases more. For example, assume there are three sites: foo, bar, and qux. Week 1, foo has 3000 visitors, bar has 2000, and qux has 1000. Thus, they are ranked foo #1, bar #2, qux #3. If week 2, foo and bar each add 10% qux takes off and gets 2500 more, we have foo with 3300, bar with 2200, and qux with 3500. So even though bar has 10% more traffic, it goes from rank 2 to 3.

I dont know if it has effected my ranking, but there has been change definitelty and may be its because of the new toobar for firefox.

Thanks for this post. I checked my ranking and I too went south by half. I could not believe it as over recent weeks I have had a steady climb and though I was getting somewhere at last. Nice to know someone else has the same problem.
