Connected Internet: Do You Prefer To Read The Latest Comments First Or Last?

  • Michael Lankton · 1 year ago
    first
  • Pete · 1 year ago
From a technical perspective, how does listing oldest comment first make the site run faster?
  • Adam Dempsey · 1 year ago
I prefer the read the older comments first, so I can read them chronalogically.
  • Everton · 1 year ago
    @Pete

It doesn't! He updated the plugin that creates the paged comments, and didn't change the config settings.

I'd prefer older first as I read left to right, top to bottom it makes senses to read the article and then keep on reading down...
  • Pete · 1 year ago
@Everton : Ah ok, I somehow made the association that the change was part of a tweak. I understand now, it was just truly inadvertent :)

I think oldest comment first is probably best? Like Adam said, we can read them chronologically. On http://ww2db.com I had newest-on-top at first, but have since changed to oldest-on-top for readability.

yeah I had a small stroke when I posted my initial reply

comments should be displayed in chronological order
  • Matt · 1 year ago
Oldest comment should be first. Chronological order is the way to do it!
  • Zath · 1 year ago
For me, they have to be in chronological order, otherwise I tend to never read more than the first couple since they are out of a follow-able order.

    Newest comments first.
  • Chris at LG · 1 year ago
Newest first makes more sense - as blogs are newest post first, so it makes sense to be consistent. That said nearly all blogs display oldest first (including ours). Hmm, interesting - worth a think about

I personaly would rather read comments from oldest to newest. The natural flow of the page as you scroll down will allow you to read comments in order and in response to each other. The other way would suggest that you scroll to the bottom of the screen and read up. Just doesn't seem right.
  • Shashank · 1 year ago
Oldest to newest is the best but for some posts its good to read reversly.
  • Cindy · 1 year ago
I agree with "Sevierville Real Estate". I would prefer to see the oldest to the newest. It's confusing when you catch the end of a conversation. Look into the "Threaded Comments" WP plugin. That offers a good way for authors and readers respond to each other without muddling up the page.

my vote is for recent posts on top...
  • Joseph Plazo · 1 year ago
I rarely look at when a comment is posted- just which ever shows up on my viewscreen first.

If there are over 15 comments....I skip em altogether
  • Syahid A. · 1 year ago
I read the first and the last one. :D
  • Dave Starr · 1 year ago
Oldest to newest is certainly my preference ... but actually you hit upon something here ... since, by fortuitous circmstance Chris found a way to show the comments in either order, why not a button that lets each reader select the order s/he wants?

BTW, it's time for an updates on Chris' optimisation efforts ... I've been waiitng to fin dout more about those great server load reduction results you 'teased' on ;-).

    Thanks, Everton.

    Latest coment does make sense...

    @Dave

The posts are coming soon. Chris is just writing up his notes while we wait for the theme updates to finish, then he's going to start work on the theme. We've decided to rebuild the theme as the code is such a mess, rather than tweak it - a preview can be seen here. It's early days so far, but it's going to look a lot better

I usually prefer oldest to newest so I can follow the conversation in order. But if there is a large amount of comments, I tend to skip to the newest ones.
  • Futon-Matt · 1 year ago
I agree, I like the older comments first followed by the newer.
