It's definitely the way forward. My spec is a X2 4200, 2GB of ram (could easily get away with 1GB), a basic mobo and a £30 case with PSU built-in which I chucked all my existing HDDs in. You can build that easily for just over £100 and then get the OEM version of WHS for around £70 I think.
