Mind sharing the name of the service you are using? ... My existing provider, SmartBro isn't all it should be in reliability. It's pretty reliable. In this entire year, the service never hiccuped. I enjoy constant download speeds of almost 100KBps in cuteftp.

You'll also love the weather here. The sun's usually out and treats you to 26 degrees celsius. Enough for a nice tan even on christmas

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

ohh well.
i am now on broadband , just hope i never touch dial up again.
it is painfully show.

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

@ Everton -- ok, understood -- I had it backwards (when did that ever happen before LoL). But the principle certainly works out the same.

If I didn't have long-standing business and family connections in Asia, Jamaica or another Caribbean island might be high on my list ... life is just tooi short to shiver and breath smog in honor of 'tradition".

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

@Dave

Jamaica is my parent's home country, but I was born in England - it's more a case of why Freeze in the adopted country when the sun is always shining at home!

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

Everton,

Merry Christmas. Broadband here in the Philippines has many flavors, I haven't yet had achance to sample them all ... I'm currently satisfied with a nominal 384kbps "wireles" DSL that usually gives better thna 384k, ulinited, for $20 USD.

Congrats to you for helping your dfolks get better equipped, they prove the point I'musing to build up my retired-themed blog ... the real growth in the Internet will come from the babyboomer generation .. for those smart enough to adapt to it, that is.

And congrats to your folks too, for living where they want to live instead of freezing in the "home country" just because it's "home". I left the US years back and have never looked back ... everyday online I miss "home" less and less ... many haven't yet really thought through the need to stay in one place because it's always been done that way ... but more do make a move nearly every day.

Best wisshes for a jealthy and properous 2008 to all.

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

We pay $19.99/month for 1.5Mps. Of course, that includes a phone line, since it's DSL.
It sounds like you gave a good present...benefiting you and your parents. :) My parents also have dial-up, but they live in the boonies so they don't even have access to anything else.

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

@Broadband Girl

I've been very impressed with the mobile network in Jamaica. The GPS on my N95 and my push email sync have been brilliant. Although the GPS maps don't go down to the street level, it does show the major roads so at least I've been able to see if I'm going the right way!

@Dennis
£30 for 4Mbps is a lot - you can get 20Mbps for £35 in the UK, although the capping reduces that to 5Mbps during peak

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

Broadband is still insanely priced in Denmark.

For a 4096/512 k/bit connection I pay about £30 ($70) a month. It's freeszing back here in the UK!

We currently pay £10/month for 2mb cable broadband from Virgin Media. Sometimes the speed is a little under or over the 2mb but overall it's a pretty stable connection and we're happy with the price.

We also have a home in Tunisia, though as yet we are still waiting for Broadband to be available to us over there. The norm in Tunisia is to pay-as-you-go for a dial-up connection, which we may invest in for our next long visit, though I will be rather frustrated by those so slow speeds!

Since installing broadband at home about three years ago, the internet has changed for our family completely. I couldn't do without it now!

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

In Singapore, you get bottonless DSL at 2Mbps for Sg$40

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

I pay Rs. 1100 for a 256 kbps connection (unlimited uploads and downloads).

Re: Broadband Installation – Caribbean Style!

ah, 50$... come on...
